| Background
India's economy is on the fulcrum of an ever increasing growth
curve. With positive indicators such as stable 8 percent annual growth and
rising foreign exchange reserves close to USD 180 billion, India is being
looked upon as a major force in attracting Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) and
creating employment opportunities for a vast resource of highly skilled
manpower. This significant progress has laid an emphasis on the creation of
world class infrastructure, which will act as a catalyst in the overall growth
of the country.
Initiatives
The Government of India announced the Special Economic Zones
(SEZ) Policy in April 2000 and enacted the SEZ Act in 2006. The SEZs provide an
integrated development approach for boosting the exports from the country,
attracting FDI, creation of employment opportunities across various sectors and
the building of world class infrastructure.
IL&FS IDC Initiative in this sector
IL&FS IDC has been closely involved over the past five years
with the evolution of policy relating to the governance of SEZs in the country
and has recognized that the development of SEZs is an infrastructure initiative
of national importance. Apart from policy initiatives, IL&FS IDC is a
pioneer in SEZ development, and has been involved in development of various
SEZs across the country. Today, IL&FS IDC is working on a wide range of
SEZs, planned by both public sector and private sector agencies.

Industrial Corridors
Government of India plans to develop Multi-modal High Axle Load
Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) between Delhi and Mumbai, covering an overall
length of 1483 km, with end terminals at Dadri in the National Capital Region
of Delhi and at Jawaharlal Nehru Port near Mumbai.
Government of India has further proposed to develop a "Delhi Mumbai
Industrial Corridor (DMIC) along the alignment of DFC between Delhi and Mumbai.
Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor is conceived to be developed as a Model
Industrial Corridor of international standards with emphasis on expanding the
manufacturing and services base and develop DMIC as the 'Global Manufacturing
and Trading Hub'. The vision for DMIC is to create strong economic base with
globally competitive environment and state-of-the-art infrastructure to
activate local commerce, enhance foreign investments and attain sustainable
development.
IL&FS IDC was the architect of the concept note for Delhi
Mumbai Industrial Corridor and has been appointed by DMICDC as Program
Management consultant to take forward the process of comprehensive master
planning of identified nodes in the first phase and implementation of the
projects.
