Background
'Conde Nast Traveler', one of the world's most
celebrated travel magazines, ranked India amongst the top 10 tourist
destinations of the world. India has significant potential for becoming a major
global tourist destination and it is estimated that tourism in India could
contribute Rs.850,000 crores (USD 191 billion) to the GDP by 2020. Currently
India has an estimated 0.8% share of the world market for tourism. This makes
tourism infrastructure a major component in the future of infrastructure
development in the country. The sector is in need of Rs.16 billion (USD 353
million) for 2007-08. With Rs.10 billion (USD 225 million) expected from the
government's budgetary support, the gap is required to be met by private funds.
Initiatives
In May 2002, under the New Tourism Policy, several policy
initiatives were initiated to make tourism a catalyst in employment generation,
wealth creation, development of remote and rural areas, environment
preservation and social integration. The policies also aim to spruce up
economic growth and promote India's strengths as a tourism destination that is
both safe as well as exciting.
